A Year Of Cultural Highs And Lows
With 2012 nearly over I started to reflect on what I saw in the last 12 months.
By the end of next week I will have spent around 125 evenings/afternoons at a theatre in either Germany, Denmark, Austria, Switzerland or the UK seeing some for me new shows (Rocky, Es War Einmal, High Fidelity, Side Show…), seen some older ones I hadn't seen for a while or just went to the familiar ones I see on a regular basis.
But what were my favourite shows/moments (as it is sometimes not really the show but something special in/about it) and what were my, well let's call them, lows.

Highs of 2012 (in no particular order):
01.
Anyone Can Whistle, Berlin Thank you Martin G. Berger and his team for this gem onstage this year.
02.
Comedian Harmonists, Paderborn Dream cast come true with my beloved Oliver Nöldner and Thomas Christ (the two performers who mean most to me in this country and who are to be "blamed" for the loveliest memories, especially Oliver) plus the other outstanding guys.
03.
Sweeney Todd, London The Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton show.
04.
High Fidelity, Hamburg This show rocks, so does its cast especially the incredible Ben Knop and the beautiful Alice Wittmer!
05.
West Side Story, Hamburg - Still such a beauty (if done properly as this international production).
06.
Blondgirl Undercover, Bad Gandersheim Fun, fun, fun.
07.
Tabaluga und die Zeichen der Zeit , Hamburg and Rostock Childhood memories
08.
The Ghetto Swinger, Hamburger Kammerspiele - perfectly told story with beautiful music and an outstanding Helen Schneider
09.
Woyzeck, Hanover Schauspielhaus - most disturbing, most fascinating, most moving, so hard to put into right words to write a post about it.
10.
Drew Sarich in Rocky, the show is enjoyable, not greatest but Drew is just out of this world
11.
Phantom of the Opera concert, Vienna - re-discovering a show
12.
Side Show, Hildesheim, last season's TfN gem with a preeminent Navina Heyne.
Lows of 2012 (in no particular order):
01. | Cabaret, Kiel Ouch, some enjoyable bits but a BAD casting of Sally Bowles. |
02. | De Lütte Horrorladen, Hamburg Horror. |
03. | Top Hat, London Top shit. |
04. | Musical In Concert, Hamburg Unprofessional |
05. | Marie Antoinette, Tecklenburg MA would be turning in her grave if she knew how bad this production was. I loved it in Bremen but Tecklenburg was just dire despite the incredible Marion Furtner. |
06. | High Society, Hildesheim The higher you climb, the farther you fall. |
07. | Dracula, Lüneburg More Twilight than Dracula - yuk. |
